WEEK 2 - Film Opening Portfolio Project
Week 2 Blog post 3
Technology: The technology that we will be using for our project is simple. First, we will be filming on our own apple phones for our camera, which is an iPhone 13 camera. Besides the camera, our teacher does have additional equipment to better the quality of our filming. He has some mics to record voices clearly, if you have an intro that has dialogue. Although our video will have a voice over so we will record a voice memo and edit it to play over our video. Since we are going to be filming on our phones, we need tools that will improve the quality of our filming technique. So, we are offered to borrow a tripod this will help tremendously with making shots steadier and more professional looking. I think that sense these videos are very homemade what makes an intro stand out is the quality. In class we watched several example intros from previous projects, and I noticed that the better-quality filming and video (technology used) the better I would think the video is no matter the plot. So, I believe that it is something to focus on and reach for when choosing our technology.
In addition to the tools being used to specifically film, most of the technology used in this project will be in post-production. This is regarding the editing process. For our project we will be editing on Adobe Premiere Pro 2021. If you are familiar with my previous posts, you know that I have used Adobe to edit other projects. So far, we have worked with Adobe 3 times. The first time was for the 8- Frame Film Project, and we were just learning all the basics. The next time was for the Napoleon Dynamite Project, where we were assigned to recreate the movie's unique introduction. And the most recent was the project from a few weeks ago where we made opening credits. This one was more specifically towards progressing towards this project where the other ones were simply learning how to navigate Adobe. In short, we plan on filming clips on our iphones and doing everything else on Adobe.
The last thing I would like to mention is something that my group and I are unsure about right now, but figured it is worth mentioning. So, we want some of our clips to look like they were filmed on an old film camera so we were thinking that we could use a app on our phones to make like that and just upload the videos onto Adobe. Although another thing we are considering is to just upload the video plain and edit the effect on with the effect that Adobe has. It has yet to be decided though.
Characters: The next topic that we have gone more into detail about is the characters of the intro. So obviously if this was a whole movie there would be more characters, but it is only the intro so we only touched on the characters that we will unveil in the 2 minutes we have. So first the obvious and almost only ones are the 2 best friends but, going more into detail about them and their personalities. In the intro we are going to try our best to make the girls seem very happy. To one, contrast the two parts of the intro. In the beginning it will be very happy-go-lucky and it will make the second have even more depressing when in contrast. Also, for the feel of the movie. Those first videos of the two girls together are the first thing the audience is going to see. So, it will set the tone of the movie, making it feel very lighthearted and make the viewers continue watching. First, Riley is the surviving friend so she will gradually become the main character. And Blair, she is the friend that doesn’t survive the accident, and is also the one driving when the accident happens. So, we are going to emphasize her as very joyful and positive, so it makes the audience feel even more emotionally hurt when she passes away. And the additional character in the film is Blair's mother. She will not have a face, but she will be introduced into the movie through the phone call. In the title slide after the car crash noise we will insert a recorded voicemail/phone call of the mothers' voice saying that Blair didn’t survive, breaking the news. The mother's presences seem small but holds a lot of the effect on the intro. First it is stating and clarifying what is going on in an interesting way instead of Riley just mentioning it in the voiceover. Also, it reminds the audiences that other people are affected by Blairs death making it more of a big deal. That causes the audience to possibly relate it to a similar experience they had, making it more relatable and causing them to feel more empathy and emotional. Now, overall, that includes the 3 characters that are established in the intro.
