WEEK 2- Film Opening Portfolio Project

                                                               Week 2 Blog Post 4

Technical Elements: Technical elements are things that are classified as mise en scene. these are all the things that affect a film that the audience doesn't even notice most of the time. Some of these elements include things such as lighting, props, costumes, scenery, and music. Things that define and set the tone of the film. Personally, our film we have 2 halves of the intro. The  first minute of the montage and compilation of videos, we are reaching for a lighthearted, warm, and positive feel. To achieve this we are going to use technical elements. First we can use lighting. We are going to film most of the clips outside and mostly use natural lighting. And the clips that are filmed indoors such as the ones in the girls rooms we will make sure the lighting is bright enough or edit them to appear brighter in post production. We want to use the lighting to make things bright and give a warm vibe. Also we can use costuming to help the audience understand the personalities and types of people the girls are. Are the characters will be just in bright beachy clothing to help establish their characters in little time. To continue the theme you can also use scenery. Considering that we live by the beach we can use our setting to our advantage. Most of the clips will be filmed outside or by the beach, helping us get the feel we are looking for easier. Another way we plan to use a technical element to attain the tone of the first half of the film intro we will utilize music. In any film of any genre music plays one of the most important roles. It can completely change the tone of a film or even send a message to the audience. In our case, we will use a upbeat coming of age song over the Clips, when the voiceover is not playing. Some songs that are similar to the feel we are trying to achieve are “Tongue Tied” by Grouplove, “Alright” by Supergrass, and “Kids” by MGMT. These all have a young almost euphoric coming of age feel to them. We assume that we are going to use a royalty free song unless we decide to make the effort to reach out to copyright companies to attempt to use one of the previously listed songs.

The second half of the intro is going to take place after the accident has been established. Obviously this part of the intro will have a heavier feel to it. And to achieve this, we use the same things we used to arrange the first half just in contrasting ways. First for lighting, we will use darker lighting. Without the audience, noticing this well initially change how the clips come off. Next for scenery, we are planning to use a lot of the same places just having them filled with only Riley in the clip to compare how she does everything alone when her and Blair used to do everything together. Although we will take these clips at a different time of day. For example, closer to nighttime to again utilize the dimmer lighting. In other words and example of this would be taking a video of them in mid day at the beach together for the first half, while taking a video of just Riley at the beach in the evening by yourself for the second half. And using the same places from the first half, will remind the audience that they were once a positive place for Riley. Next is costuming. For the first half costume and will be used to mostly establish the type of characters that the two girls are so we will have to keep that the same, to show that Riley didn’t change, but can tweak things about it to match the feel. For instance, we can dress her in baggier and darker themed clothing. And finally music as it is one of the most influential technical elements, it can be assumed that we are going to use a complete Lee different song then from the first half we don’t want a very busy song because we will have the voiceover playing, but we want something that has a side effect to do it. Some songs that we were inspired by is stubborn love by the Lumineers, and inside out by duster. These both will automatically dim the mood and help us in the best way possible try to reflect onto the audience of how Riley is feeling.
